Real Madrid Call for Javier Tebas to Step Down After Joseph Goebbels Comparison

News

Real Madrid have demanded the “immediate resignation” of La Liga president Javier Tebas following remarks that likened the club’s leadership approach to propaganda associated with Nazi official Joseph Goebbels.

Tebas claimed that Real Madrid’s public messaging and use of its own television channel resembled propaganda methods employed by Goebbels.

Real Madrid described his comments as “deeply offensive” and “morally repugnant”.

The club also called on Tebas to leave his roles as president of Spain’s top division and vice-president of the Spanish Football Association (RFEF).

“Real Madrid believes it is completely unacceptable and exceptionally serious for a person occupying two of the most important positions in Spanish football to invoke Nazi propaganda practices in an attempt to discredit our club, its leadership and its television channel,” the club said.

In an extensive message posted on X on Friday, Tebas said: “Real Madrid’s leadership conducts a group of supportive voices, with Real Madrid TV taking the leading role.

“The pattern remains unchanged: highlight incidents that support their position, repeatedly portray themselves as victims, encourage doubt and blame perceived opponents.

“This approach resembles propaganda techniques used by Goebbels, Nazi Germany’s propaganda minister: constant repetition, the creation of an enemy and the adjustment of facts to fit a chosen narrative.”

Tebas later clarified that his comparison referred only to “those propaganda techniques” and not to any ideology.

Real Madrid dismissed that explanation, arguing that it did nothing to lessen the institutionally inappropriate character of his remarks.

The club added: “These comments represent another incident in Javier Tebas’s continuing series of attacks on Real Madrid, its president and its media platforms.”

Last month, Tebas rebuked Real Madrid over its allegation that referees were involved in a conspiracy against the club.

He has also repeatedly criticised the club and its president, Florentino Perez, since opposing their proposed participation in a European Super League in 2021.

In 2025, he said the club had “lost their head” after it submitted a formal complaint to the Spanish FA concerning refereeing standards in the league.
