Cristiano Ronaldo Handed 30-Day Ban and £215 Fine After Portugal Walkout

Portugal’s football federation has handed Cristiano Ronaldo a 30-day suspension after he departed the national squad’s training camp following a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus about his position in the team. The disciplinary council confirmed the charge against the 41-year-old striker and also issued a €255 (£215) fine.

Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen before the Nations League fixture against Denmark earlier this month. He claimed Jesus had failed on two occasions to honour assurances about his role after leaving him on the bench throughout the match against Norway. Jesus rejected the suggestion that any such promise had been made, although he indicated Ronaldo could still return following Portugal’s 2-1 victory.

The disciplinary council’s non-professional panel concluded that Ronaldo had deliberately breached Article 160(1) of the federation’s disciplinary rules. The case was opened on 9 October in response to events reported two days earlier.

The announcement did not clarify which games or official duties would fall within the suspension, nor did it confirm whether any period completed under a temporary ban would be deducted from the 30-day penalty.

Ronaldo subsequently apologised for not recognising the supporters after the Norway game and for walking away from his teammates. He added that he would remain available for selection once any sanction connected to the incident had been completed.

Portuguese federation president Pedro Proença said those within the organisation hoped Ronaldo would rejoin the national squad after the issue had been settled.
