Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says only a “tiny minority” of people are critical of his side’s approach to matches.
The Gunners have claimed 10 victories from their opening 11 fixtures this season, although goals have not always come easily and they have found it difficult to unlock compact defences.
They required an 80th-minute strike from substitute Noni Madueke to secure a narrow win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
That effort was only their 11th goal across seven Premier League matches this term.
Arsenal lifted the Premier League title last season after recording the division’s best defensive record and leading the competition for goals scored from set-pieces.
However, they are yet to score from a set-piece in any competition this season.
Responding to discussion about Arsenal’s style, Arteta said: “That is not the impression I get because I have also heard plenty of praise for how we play. We have scored many goals, controlled more possession, produced more attempts and involved a wider range of players, all without relying on set-pieces.”
“The situation is therefore completely different from last season.”
“In my view, the criticism comes from a very small group. Most people understand what we are doing and have enjoyed watching us control matches this season. I believe we have demonstrated that clearly.”
Arteta nevertheless accepts that his team can improve when facing opponents who defend close to their own goal.
“Breaking down a deep defensive block requires a different approach from playing against a high press. When a team keeps so many players behind the ball and protects its back line, the challenge changes,” said the Spaniard, whose team meet Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday.
“It asks different questions of us. Looking back at Sunday, there were still several areas where we could have performed better. Those improvements are within our control, and we must be honest enough to acknowledge them.”
Goalkeeper David Raya says the squad is not frustrated by scrutiny of its playing style and believes Arsenal’s results this season provide a strong response.
“Everyone is entitled to their own view, just as we have ours. We have suffered only one defeat in 11 matches this season, so if people describe that as dull or frustrating, I am not sure what else I can say,” he said.
“We love playing the game and step onto the pitch each day determined to win. Ultimately, that is what matters most.”
