Flames, noise and intensity filled the air, while a football match unfolded elsewhere in the city.
Do these early-season Champions League fixtures carry much significance? Perhaps not for Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, two clubs largely expected to reach the knockout rounds while benefiting from the competition’s substantial broadcast revenue.
Even so, the Parc des Princes witnessed a spectacular contest between the champions of France and Spain. The open, fast-moving encounter ended in a 4-2 victory for PSG after Barcelona had recovered to make it 2-2. At times, the result felt almost secondary to PSG’s vibrant attacking display and the serious weaknesses in Barcelona’s defence.
The stadium announcer roared into the microphone before kick-off, adding to an already deafening atmosphere inside the ground.
The match delivered an abundance of attacking entertainment. Before play began, flames, lasers and a huge display behind one goal created a dramatic setting and underlined the home crowd’s confidence.
The opening exchanges were remarkably open and played at an elite tempo. For Hansi Flick’s Barcelona, this was a demanding examination of their aggressive approach, which relies on pressing high and trusting the defensive structure left behind.
PSG should have scored inside the first minute. A rapid passing sequence from right to left released Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, whose effort struck the post. The rebound reached an offside Ousmane Dembélé, but he failed to convert with the goal exposed.
PSG attacked with ferocious energy during the opening minutes, with their forwards repeatedly discovering space and dangerous passing lanes. Pedri and Marc Bernal initially struggled to establish control in Barcelona’s midfield. The 19-year-old Bernal, a product of La Masia, combined youthful features with an imposing physical presence, while Pedri moved through the contest with his customary ease.
Barcelona soon began creating opportunities of their own. Dani Olmo made several powerful runs from deep, while Anthony Gordon narrowly failed to connect with a cutback.
João Cancelo received a booking after 16 minutes for a challenge on Désiré Doué, leaving the full-back in a difficult position against an attacker blessed with deceptive movement and explosive footwork. Two minutes later, Dembélé suffered an injury while chasing the ball and was replaced by Ferran Torres.
The action continued to flow rapidly between both ends. Matvey Safonov blocked Raphinha’s close-range attempt after a clever pass from Gordon. In the 28th minute, PSG produced three shots within six seconds, only to be denied by blocks and an excellent low save from Joan García.
PSG deservedly moved ahead in the 37th minute. The goal combined technical quality with the openness that had defined the match. Lamine Yamal attempted a delicate chipped clearance, but João Neves recovered possession. The ball reached Doué, who shifted inside, assessed the available space and guided a low shot inside the post.
PSG were firmly in control by this stage, with Kvaratskhelia repeatedly changing pace down the left flank. Barcelona reached half-time under heavy pressure after being overwhelmed in midfield and stretched on both sides.
The second half began in similar fashion, with constant movement, polished attacking combinations and large gaps appearing throughout Barcelona’s back line. After being released by Vitinha, Doué forced another impressive save from close range.
Barcelona equalised in the 54th minute through Xavi Espart. He surged through the left side of PSG’s defence and drove a powerful shot beyond Safonov, despite the goalkeeper getting his hands to the ball. It was the versatile 19-year-old academy graduate’s first goal in European competition and only the second of his senior career.
Barcelona soon made three substitutions, including the introduction of Rodri. His arrival briefly brought greater order to the match as the visitors began controlling possession and gaining territory.
PSG, however, remained capable of causing damage. Doué broke through on the right and crossed for Fabián Ruiz, who struck the post from six yards. From the resulting corner, Lucas Hernandez found room to rise and power a superb header into the top corner.
Six minutes later, Lamine Yamal made it 2-2. He produced an outstanding run from the right before lifting the ball inside the near post, leaving it unclear whether Safonov had made an error or the finish was simply an inspired piece of invention.
PSG regained the lead only two minutes later as the match continued at a relentless pace. Vitinha met a bouncing ball near the edge of the penalty area with a controlled first-time strike. Fabián Ruiz then added a fourth goal with four minutes remaining as the home side maintained their attacking pressure until the end.
