Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital after becoming unwell during Bayern Munich’s training session on Friday.
The Belgian coach had been dealing with a virus for several days but continued working with the team before his condition worsened and medical treatment was required.
The Bundesliga leaders are scheduled to visit Freiburg on Sunday after drawing 2-2 at home with Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday. Despite the illness, Kompany was present on the bench for that match.
In a statement on their website, Bayern confirmed that Kompany needed medical assistance after collapsing while watching a training session involving the club’s reserve side.
The club added that he is receiving a comprehensive assessment in hospital and will remain under medical supervision. His coaching staff will oversee training and match preparations in his absence.
Bayern sporting board member Max Eberl said Kompany’s wellbeing remains the club’s main concern and that every effort will be made to support his recovery.
Eberl also confirmed that the coach is receiving appropriate treatment and assistance and will be allowed all the time he needs to recover. Everyone at the club has sent him their best wishes.
