Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany was admitted to hospital after fainting while observing the club’s reserve team training on Friday.
The 40-year-old had been suffering from a viral illness and was unable to attend Tuesday’s press conference ahead of Bayern’s Champions League meeting with Arsenal. However, the Belgian was present on the sidelines for the game.
The Bundesliga club confirmed that Kompany required medical attention on Friday after losing consciousness during a training session involving Bayern’s reserve side.
The first-team manager had been observing the second team’s practice when the incident occurred.
Kompany will remain under medical supervision in hospital while doctors carry out comprehensive tests.
His coaching staff will temporarily oversee training sessions and match preparations.
Bayern are scheduled to face Freiburg in Germany’s top division on Sunday.
Sporting director Max Eberl said Kompany’s wellbeing is the club’s main concern and that Bayern will provide everything needed to support his recovery.
He added that Kompany would receive appropriate treatment, full assistance and as much recovery time as necessary.
Eberl also expressed complete trust in the coaching team taking over Kompany’s responsibilities and said everyone at the club hopes he recovers quickly.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks handled Bayern’s pre-match press conference before the fixture against Arsenal.
