Championship recap: Fortunate Portsmouth edge Millwall as Norwich return to winning form | Championship

Bolton Wanderers Championship Charlton Athletic Derby County Football Middlesbrough Millwall Norwich City Portsmouth Sheffield United Sport

Thomas Waddingham completed Portsmouth’s 2-1 comeback victory over Millwall at Fratton Park. The decisive moment arrived in the 82nd minute when Jake Cooper’s attempted clearance struck Waddingham before finding the net in a match filled with errors.

Jenson Metcalfe gave the visitors an early advantage after Portsmouth goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid made a mistake, but Lyndon Dykes’s own goal soon brought the hosts level.

Waddingham’s fortunate late goal gave Portsmouth their third victory in four matches, while Millwall have collected only six points from their past seven fixtures.

Patrick Bamford suffered an injury while scoring Sheffield United’s equaliser in a 1-1 draw against 10-man Derby at Bramall Lane. Bobby Clark put the visitors in front during the first half, but Bamford made it 1-1 in the 79th minute before leaving the field after landing awkwardly.

Norwich ended a run of six consecutive defeats by coming from behind to beat Charlton 3-1, reducing the pressure on head coach Philippe Clement. Charlie Kelman handed Charlton an early lead, but Paris Maghoma restored parity before Mathias Kvistgaarden put the visitors ahead. An own goal from Ivan Mesik then completed the scoring.

The result marked Charlton’s first home defeat of the season and extended their winless Championship run to nine matches.

League One roundup: Marshall delivers late blow to Foxes

Callum Marshall struck deep into stoppage time to give Luton a dramatic 2-1 win and increase the pressure on Leicester manager Russell Martin. The 10-man Foxes looked set to secure a draw when Liam Cullen produced an excellent equaliser five minutes after John Lundstram was dismissed. Marshall, however, scored in the fourth minute of added time to condemn Martin’s team to their fourth league loss in 11 matches. Luton had taken the lead in the 39th minute after Jordan Clark dispossessed Caleb Okoli and supplied Nakhi Wells, who finished confidently. Leicester went down to 10 players with five minutes remaining when Lundstram received a second yellow card for a late challenge on Isaiah Jones.

Huddersfield strengthened their promotion challenge with a 2-1 win over bottom-placed Wigan. Ilias Bronkhorst and Derensili Sanches Fernandes scored for the Terriers before Christian Saydee pulled one back late in the game. The victory moved Huddersfield above Stockport at the top of the standings before Stockport’s Saturday afternoon meeting with Notts County.

On Friday, Will Lankshear scored twice as Middlesbrough swept aside Bolton 5-1. First-half goals from Aidan Morris and Lankshear, along with an own goal by Lewis Brunt, put the Teessiders on course for a 10th straight victory over Bolton in a sequence dating back to 2014.

Thelonius Bair offered Steven Schumacher’s team a glimmer of hope in the second minute of first-half added time. Former Bolton loanee Amario Cozier-Duberry, who recorded nine goals and 10 assists for the Trotters in League One last season, restored Middlesbrough’s commanding advantage in the 73rd minute. Five minutes later, Lankshear completed the scoring with his 11th league goal of the campaign.

League Two roundup: Stanway secures Cheltenham victory

Charlie McCann’s early goal earned Cheltenham a 1-0 win against Newport, although goalkeeper Wyll Stanway had to make an impressive penalty save to preserve the victory. The decisive goal arrived after five minutes when Jake Evans advanced down the right and cut the ball back for McCann, who calmly guided his effort into the upper-left corner of Jordan Wright’s net.

Northampton moved out of the relegation places after defeating Colchester 2-0 at Sixfields. Matty Warhurst headed the Cobblers into an early lead before Sam Hoskins added the second with a clever finish shortly after half-time.

The derby between Swindon and Bristol Rovers ended without a goal.

Middlesbrough’s victory took them to the top of the table overnight, although a Saturday afternoon win for either Swansea or West Ham would move them back down the standings. Swansea visit ninth-placed QPR, while West Ham, fresh from winning in south Wales the previous weekend, welcome a Southampton team that would sit fourth without its Spygate points penalty.
