Barry Murphy, Barnsley’s record appearance holder, has passed away at the age of 86.
The defender made 569 appearances for the Tykes between 1962 and 1978 after arriving from South Shields.
After ending his playing career, Murphy continued working for the South Yorkshire side as a member of manager Allan Clarke’s coaching team, having taken on a player-coach role in 1975.
In 1980, he joined Clarke at Leeds United and stayed at Elland Road until 1984.
Nicknamed “Spud”, Murphy became the first player to appear as a substitute for Barnsley in 1965. He also established a club record by playing in 182 consecutive matches and received the player-of-the-year award in 1972.
Following his retirement, Murphy regularly returned to Oakwell as a guest and frequently hosted charitable events on behalf of the club.
In a post on X, Barnsley said: “We are deeply saddened to confirm that Barry Murphy has passed away at the age of 86.
“A celebrated full-back and our record holder with 569 appearances for the Reds, Barry will always be remembered as a genuine Barnsley legend.”
