Carrick played 464 matches for Manchester United during a 12-year spell with the club.
His long association with the team has made him a well-liked figure among supporters. After the Bournemouth defeat, fans sang his name as he walked around the pitch and thanked them for their backing.
Carrick told Sky Sports that he did not view the moment as a farewell.
He said he had conflicting feelings because his players were enduring a difficult period. While some problems could be addressed, he acknowledged that other circumstances had become harder to control and were affecting the squad.
Carrick added that the supporters’ response meant a great deal to him. He appreciated the bond he shared with them but said he would need time to process the occasion.
He also admitted that the team’s recent results and displays had fallen below the required standard.
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville told Sky Sports that the crowd sang Carrick’s song because they appeared to understand what could happen next. He noted that Carrick remained popular because of his strong connection to the club.
Neville argued that the owners, sporting officials and players had lost the supporters’ approval and had seriously failed the club.
He suggested that Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox were likely to make a decision that would anger many fans, although he believed it might be unavoidable.
Neville described the overall situation as a complete disorder.
Once Carrick had left the field, the supportive chants were replaced by boos as the crowd expressed its dissatisfaction with the players and the club’s leadership.
Former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison said the reaction clearly reflected the supporters’ feelings.
According to Morrison, the fans continued to support Carrick but had lost faith in the players, which he found deeply concerning.
He observed that Carrick received loud applause, while the players were booed as soon as they remained on the pitch without him. Morrison believed their performances had not been acceptable and said a manager could only influence so much.
In his view, the squad did not possess enough quality to win matches consistently.
Former Manchester United full-back Ashley Young said the outcome was especially disappointing for Carrick.
Young explained that supporters naturally stood behind Carrick because of his status at the club. However, he criticised the players for showing little effort, failing to run with purpose and lacking unity on the field.
He added that Bournemouth were superior throughout the team and described Manchester United’s display as extremely poor.
