Manchester United may need to pay Newcastle approximately £3m in compensation to appoint Eddie Howe as their new manager. Michael Carrick is likely to remain in charge until an agreement with his replacement is complete.

Carrick is expected to oversee Tuesday’s training session after football director Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada held talks about his position following a 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth, which extended the team’s winless run to eight matches.

Howe is Wilcox’s preferred choice and is interested in taking the position. Newcastle would be entitled to compensation under an agreement covering the outstanding terms of his contract when he departed the club in July.

United would also need to provide Newcastle with a smaller payment for Howe’s coaching team, led by assistant Jason Tindall.

Christopher Vivell, Manchester United’s recruitment director, has been advocating for Julian Nagelsmann, who previously managed Germany and Bayern Munich.
