Michael Carrick was present at Manchester United’s training complex on Monday afternoon while sporting director Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada considered whether to dismiss the head coach.
Carrick arrived at approximately 1.50pm to attend a behind-closed-doors match involving the under-21 team.
Wilcox and Berrada held talks at Carrington on Monday morning following United’s 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday, a result that placed Carrick’s position under serious threat. Wilcox left shortly before 5pm, with Carrick departing soon afterwards.
The result extended United’s winless run to eight matches. Carrick’s team have recorded only two victories this season and sit 16th in the Premier League, one point clear of the relegation places.
Should the 45-year-old leave his role, Eddie Howe is believed to be Wilcox’s leading choice, and contact has reportedly already taken place. The former Newcastle manager would consider accepting the position if suitable terms can be agreed.
Appointing Howe would likely cost less than pursuing Unai Emery, another highly rated option, because Aston Villa could request around £20m in compensation for the Spanish coach.
Former Germany and Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann is strongly admired by United’s recruitment chief Christopher Vivell, who is thought to have approached his compatriot. However, Wilcox’s recommendation may carry greater influence with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who oversees the club’s football strategy. Antonio Conte, who departed Napoli during the summer, may also be considered.
Carrick said his decision to leave Bruno Fernandes out of the starting lineup against Bournemouth was based entirely on football considerations. It followed criticism from the 32-year-old regarding Carrick’s tactics after the 4-1 defeat at Como last Wednesday.
The captain remained on the bench throughout the match and, together with several teammates, was jeered by supporters in the Stretford End after the Bournemouth defeat.
On Monday, Fernandes reacted positively to an Instagram post warning against testing a loyal person until they stop caring. It also suggested that the individual keeping everything together is often the one whose wellbeing others overlook.
