2026 World Cup: Just Fontaine, the most prolific marksman in World Cup history.

Uncategorized

In contrast to the legends who have fruitlessly pursued his World Cup scoring record for nearly seven decades, Fontaine remains somewhat obscure to today’s fans. Although figures like Pele and Messi are deservedly celebrated as the greatest male footballers, Fontaine has been reduced to a mere footnote.

However, this overlooks the extraordinary journey of Fontaine — a player who, in the contemporary era, would have worn the colors of a different nation.

The 2026 World Cup quarter-final clash between France and Morocco could be called the Just Fontaine derby. He entered the world in Marrakesh in August 1933, when Morocco was still under French protectorate rule.

Morocco became independent two years prior to the 1958 tournament, yet by then Fontaine had already become a seasoned international competing in France’s domestic leagues, leading him to play for Les Bleus.

And, as sports journalist and historian Philip Barker pointed out, had things proceeded according to France’s original plan, Fontaine would never have been in the starting lineup for the World Cup in Sweden.

Barker explains: “He was not the first-choice striker — his teammate Rene Bliard suffered an injury during a warm-up match. The switch happened so late that Fontaine had to borrow a pair of boots from fellow player Stephane Bruey for the first fixture, because he didn’t have any that suited him.”

“It’s hard to envision such a scenario in the modern game, so far removed from the present-day setup.”

“Fontaine underwent surgery on his meniscus — the cartilage in his knee — during the season, which cast doubt over his participation. Yet this meant he arrived at the tournament feeling refreshed, while many other players were worn out from a grueling campaign.”
