Kazuyoshi Miura, the oldest active professional footballer in the world, netted his first goal in almost four years at age 59 while representing Japanese third-division club Fukushima United.
Miura scored in the 52nd minute, putting Fukushima 5-0 ahead on their way to a commanding 7-0 victory against Iwaki Furukawa in Saturday’s Emperor’s Cup match.
The strike was his first in a competitive fixture since he scored for Suzuka PG, now known as Atletico Suzuka, against FC Osaka in November 2022.
Widely known in Japan as ‘King Kazu’, Miura is among the nation’s most admired sporting figures and became a prominent symbol of the J League when the competition began in 1993.
His career began at Brazilian club Santos in 1986, and he later competed at club level in Italy, Croatia and Australia.
The veteran forward is set to begin the 42nd season of his remarkable career after extending his Fukushima loan from J2 League club Yokohama FC through June 2027.
Miura joined Yokohama in 2005, although he has not made an appearance for the club since 2020.
At international level, he registered 55 goals across 89 appearances for Japan and has previously expressed his ambition to continue playing beyond the age of 60.
