Thomas Meunier thrilled to complete free transfer switch to Sunderland

Sunderland have finalised the acquisition of seasoned Belgian right-back Thomas Meunier on a two-year contract as Régis Le Bris’s squad intensifies its build-up for a second straight Premier League season that also features a Europa League campaign.

Fresh from his World Cup involvement, Meunier has won 83 caps for Belgium and was available on a free transfer after his deal at Lille ran out. The 34-year-old becomes Sunderland’s first new arrival of the summer window.

“I am absolutely thrilled and privileged to join Sunderland,” Meunier said. “In my discussions with the club I was struck by its ambition, the vision and the determination to keep progressing. The chance to compete in European competition was also a major factor behind my choice. I hope to offer my experience to the group, both on the pitch and away from it.”

Over a career that includes successful spells at Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund, Meunier has recorded 43 Champions League appearances and 33 Europa League outings. Standing at 6ft 3in, he blends a powerful physical presence with an attacking threat from right-back, where he is set to challenge Northern Ireland’s Trai Hume. His arrival may also allow Nordi Mukiele to move from full-back into the centre of defence.
