An online publication of the meeting’s notes reveals O’Neill informed the Celtic hierarchy that his current group lacks the quality to challenge and urgently needs reinforcements, even after securing both the league title and cup trophy last season.
When the three directors were pressed on the club’s sluggish transfer activity, the notes record Nicholson citing the challenges of negotiating with representatives and the struggle to match the financial pull of the top two English divisions.
He further mentioned the team is working hard to bring in players without current contracts.
O’Neill is said to have stressed a shift toward emerging talents, noting they typically show greater hunger, are easier to mould in Celtic’s system, and are less motivated by salary alone.
The notes also indicate Nicholson confirmed Celtic have recently put a long-term vision in place — aiming to lead domestically, maintain economic stability, and make an impact on the continental stage.
After drawing 1-1 with Shelbourne and suffering a 4-1 defeat to Sporting in pre-season so far, Celtic are set to take on Middlesbrough and AC Milan before kicking off their competitive campaign against Dundee in the top flight on 3 August.
