Coventry City complete signing of Aurele Amenda in £17m+ deal

Coventry City have completed the signing of defender Aurele Amenda from Eintracht Frankfurt in a deal worth more than £17 million.

The Swiss centre-back has moved for an initial fee of £15.4m, with a further £1.7m in potential add-ons, and has agreed a four-year contract with the newly promoted Premier League club.

The 22-year-old is believed to have been convinced by a compelling vision presented by manager Frank Lampard and Coventry’s recruitment department.

“After my first conversation with the gaffer, I felt the belief he had in me and I liked the project, so I see this as a very positive move for me,” he said.

“I am really looking forward to meeting everyone at the club, particularly the fans and my new teammates.”

“I enjoy protecting my goal, but I also like to get involved in build-up play; my composure on the ball will allow me to help the team in that regard.”

Despite not making an appearance, Amenda was part of the Switzerland squad that reached the World Cup quarter-finals.

Amenda becomes Coventry’s third summer acquisition, following the signings of winger Loum Tchaouna from Burnley and midfielder Frank Onyeka, whose move from Brentford has been made permanent.

The Sky Blues remain interested in goalkeeper Carl Rushworth of Brighton, but a deal has not yet been agreed, and Chelsea’s Filip Jorgensen is considered a fallback option.

After renewing Lampard’s contract earlier this summer, Coventry launched their pre-season with a 3-2 behind-closed-doors friendly defeat to Wimbledon.

They are set to face Northampton Town and Espanyol next as they gear up for their first top-flight campaign in 25 years.
