Reports indicate that Rashford is comfortable with the idea of rejoining United’s training sessions.
To begin with, the dynamic between the player and the current coach is not as combative.
Ruben Amorim had a falling out with the attacker shortly after taking over from Sporting Lisbon. Amorim later sidelined him, leading to a temporary transfer to Aston Villa.
Then, when pre-season preparations started last summer, the manager placed Rashford in a group of players set apart from the main squad, alongside Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho.
All four of those other players have since departed the club.
Michael Carrick, who took over from Amorim, previously played alongside Rashford. He has also served as his coach and, for a short spell, as his manager after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was let go in 2021. The two are understood to have a good relationship.
The single public comment Carrick made about Rashford, near the close of the previous campaign, was reconciliatory, reflecting his usual temperament.
So far, he has not been questioned on his position regarding the player’s potential reintegration.
Meanwhile, United remain firm in their decision not to discuss revised terms with Barcelona or entertain another loan move to the Spanish side.
There is uncertainty about Barcelona’s desire for Rashford, considering they have already recruited England winger Anthony Gordon and are poised to sign German attacker Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund.
United’s consistent stance is being voiced during a transfer window where they want to demonstrate they will not be pressured into excessive spending to complete transfers.
This prudence could have repercussions – though it was believed Elliot Anderson would have moved to Manchester City regardless, United refused to consider the £116 million fee Nottingham Forest ultimately received for him.
A similar situation arose with Mateus Fernandes and his £85 million transfer from West Ham to Tottenham.
Nonetheless, Manchester United’s improved application of data, led by director Michael Sansoni and his specialist group, leaves the club confident in their ability to secure alternative signings that represent superior value.
