‘A New Beginning’: Michael Carrick Reassured by Manchester United’s Draw With Leeds | Manchester United

After spending the week blocking out outside criticism, Michael Carrick said Manchester United’s 1-1 draw away to Leeds on Sunday felt like a new beginning. The head coach also maintained that his team can still turn the campaign into a successful one.

Carrick’s side have collected seven points from seven Premier League matches, with their only victory coming against Ipswich in August. The result at Leeds followed another 1-1 draw against Tottenham the previous weekend.

United had also suffered a 2-0 defeat at Atlético Madrid during the week, after which Lisandro Martínez questioned the appointment of football director Jason Wilcox. Against that backdrop, Carrick was pleased to leave with a point from the meeting with Daniel Farke’s team.

Carrick said the atmosphere inside the club had remained fairly calm because he had shut out the surrounding noise. He described the match as an opportunity to reset, accept the team’s current position and respond positively. Although he acknowledged that a draw was no reason for excessive celebration, he believes consistently making the correct decisions will eventually bring deserved rewards.

He added that the players showed how determined they are to support one another and how much representing the club matters to them. Carrick felt the squad had displayed a strong sense of purpose in recent days and carried that attitude into a match filled with intensity. He had also reminded them beforehand of the rivalry’s history and its importance to the supporters and the club.

Carrick accepted that United’s league position is well below expectations, but remained confident that the season can be revived. He said the club is not pretending everything is fine and admitted that difficult periods are sometimes unavoidable.

He stressed that the team must remain composed, continue following the right approach and find a path through its current problems. Despite how concerning the situation may appear, Carrick believes United possess enough ability to win games, build momentum and produce a strong run of results.

Bryan Mbeumo gave United the lead in the first half, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised after the interval, leaving Farke frustrated that Leeds failed to secure all three points.

The Leeds manager said being considered favourites against Manchester United reflected the progress his team had made over the previous month. He believed Leeds had earned that recognition and wanted to justify it with their performance. Although his side controlled much of the contest, Farke felt they lacked precision near the penalty area and failed to convert their superiority into a victory. He added that collecting points in the league remains difficult and requires teams to be clinical and highly efficient.
