Billy Vigar: Parents Say Son’s Death Could Have Been Avoided

News

Billy Vigar entered organised football later than many young players, but his ability did not go unnoticed.

Arsenal scouts spotted him playing for Sussex-based Hove Rivervale, leading to a place in the Premier League club’s academy.

His father described the moment as an incredible experience.

He said it felt as though his son had been specially selected. Having promised Billy a quality pair of boots if he joined an academy, he joked that the achievement had cost him a fortune ever since.

He recalled that Billy stood out from others, adding that even those at Arsenal recognised something exceptional in him. A naturally gifted athlete from a young age, Billy was fiercely competitive, as his brother quickly discovered whenever he tried to challenge him.

Vigar later suffered several injuries and was recovering from one of them while representing Chichester City FC, where he had immediately made his mark.

First-team manager Darin Kilpatrick said Billy responded extremely well to coaching. He could make runs behind defenders, come short to receive the ball and hold up play effectively, while also possessing the goalscoring instinct required of a striker.

Kilpatrick added that Billy’s performances in his final few matches suggested the club might only have kept him for another six months before he progressed to the higher level where he belonged.

When asked how far Billy could have advanced, Kilpatrick said he had no doubt the forward was capable of playing in the National League or the English Football League.

For Keith Vigar, returning to watch football has been emotionally challenging.

He explained that the sport initially felt much less significant and that reconnecting with it was difficult. Attending Chichester matches was especially painful because he could not help thinking that Billy should have been on the pitch.

The Vigar family said Chichester FC had provided remarkable support over the previous year, including creating a kit featuring understated but touching tributes to their son.

The family are seeking clear answers and accountability as they wait for an inquest expected to be held next year.

On the first anniversary of their son’s fatal accident, they plan to concentrate on climbing Snowdon alongside their children, Phoebe and Ollie, as well as the family of Billy’s girlfriend, Lois.

Keith said the climb would give them a shared purpose and a challenge to complete. He believed Billy would have enjoyed taking part and imagined him somehow watching over them and laughing as they made their way through the rain.
