Brentford have completed the transfer of Mali international midfielder Mamadou Sangare from Lens for a new club-record fee.
The 24-year-old has agreed to a five-year deal that includes an option to extend his stay by another season.
Although the exact amount was not disclosed, the club confirmed that it exceeds the £42.5m spent on Dango Ouattara, who arrived from Bournemouth last summer.
Brentford head coach Keith Andrews said the club had monitored Sangare for a long period and had been eager to add him to the squad.
Andrews highlighted the midfielder’s impressive progress following several loan spells, as well as his consistently strong displays for a Lens side that ended the season second in the league.
He also praised Sangare’s performances at international level, where he has established himself as an important member of the Mali team.
The central midfielder featured 33 times for Lens last season after moving to the club from Rapid Vienna.
Sangare began his career with Red Bull Salzburg and spent time on several loan assignments before his displays for Hartberg secured him a transfer to Rapid Vienna.
He has earned 16 international appearances and represented Mali at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Andrews added that Sangare showed a strong desire to join the club during their discussions, describing him as modest but highly motivated to fulfil his ambitions.
The coach believes the midfielder possesses the qualities expected of a Brentford player both on and off the field, and expects him to quickly become a favourite among supporters.
