When does an encouraging opening begin to look like a genuine breakthrough? It may still be too early to say, but as Leeds scored freely during a thrilling evening at Elland Road, it felt as though expectations around the club were beginning to rise.
Those who followed Leeds closely during the summer believed the team had the potential to produce an impressive season. After establishing themselves in the Premier League last term, they strengthened that foundation with an excellent transfer window, creating renewed optimism in West Yorkshire.
Even against that hopeful backdrop, this result carried extra weight. Leeds did far more than defeat a Newcastle team that had also made a promising start under Matthias Jaissle; they completely overwhelmed them. The emphatic victory lifted Daniel Farke’s side to third place in the table.
In an era when immediate results are often demanded, both clubs may find value in patience. When the outstanding Dominic Calvert-Lewin put Leeds 3-0 ahead before the interval, it was remarkable to recall that less than a year earlier many supporters believed Farke should leave.
Farke preserved his position by switching to a three-man defence against Manchester City last November. That tactical adjustment inspired a revival, helped Leeds secure their Premier League status and laid the groundwork for their superb start to this campaign. Another victory against Crystal Palace on Sunday could suggest this team is capable of exceeding its original ambitions.
For Jaissle, this represented the first major setback of his Newcastle tenure, and further challenges may follow as he attempts to shape the team according to his ideas. However, Leeds demonstrated how sound decisions and patience can eventually deliver results, while Newcastle could have few objections to the final outcome.
Leeds controlled the contest from beginning to end. Their opening goal involved some good fortune, with Ao Tanaka’s effort taking touches off substitute Sean Steur and Lewis Miley before wrong-footing Lukas Hornicek, but the hosts had fully earned their advantage. Only two minutes later, Jayden Bogle headed in James Justin’s cross to double the lead.
Bogle has steadily developed into one of Leeds’ most reliable performers and is among several players who may be difficult for Thomas Tuchel to overlook when selecting his next England squad. The scorer of Leeds’ third goal, which arrived during first-half stoppage time, may have an even stronger case for inclusion.
Calvert-Lewin converted his latest opportunity with impressive composure, guiding a controlled finish into the net to give Leeds a 3-0 half-time advantage.
With James Trafford in goal, Leeds now have several players who could push for international selection if they maintain this level of performance, further underlining the club’s upward momentum.
Their manager may also belong in that emerging group. Farke described the display as outstanding for almost the entire match, while stressing that his players must remain grounded. He acknowledged that Leeds may not possess the strongest individuals but insisted they can achieve success through exceptional teamwork.
Any hope of a dramatic Newcastle recovery quickly faded after the interval when Sven Botman carelessly surrendered possession to Anton Stach. Although Stach missed a clear opportunity to add a fourth, Leeds soon extended their lead when Noah Okafor fired through a crowded penalty area and effectively settled the contest.
Jaissle became increasingly frustrated as the match progressed and remained visibly disappointed afterwards. He admitted Newcastle had failed to match Leeds’ intensity, highlighting how unforgiving Premier League matches can be. He also accepted that setbacks were inevitable and described the defeat as a particularly difficult one.
Newcastle did claim a late consolation when substitute Bazoumana Touré, who provided energy after his introduction, took advantage of an unusual Leeds mistake to reduce the deficit to 4-1.
By then, however, the result had been decided for some time, and celebrations among the home supporters were already in full flow.
