Chelsea Open Talks to Sign Brighton Striker Danny Welbeck

News

Welbeck’s potential transfer to Chelsea would offer further evidence of the club adopting a different recruitment approach this summer.

Their interest comes after they tried to recruit 33-year-old midfielder Granit Xhaka from Sunderland, although the Black Cats declined to part with the Switzerland captain.

While signing 23-year-old Rogers aligns with the club’s preference for younger talent, he already has considerable experience in the Premier League.

The Blues are also likely to finalize a £52m deal for 26-year-old Crystal Palace defender Lacroix, bringing in another player already familiar with Premier League football.

Even so, adding Welbeck would give Chelsea a crowded group of attacking players despite the club having no European fixtures.

Given his age, Welbeck could be willing to serve as Joao Pedro’s backup, though his arrival would create difficulties for several of Chelsea’s other forwards.

Jackson is prepared to consider a departure, whereas Delap and Emegha had been aiming to secure regular roles under Alonso.

Despite those concerns, Chelsea’s manager is securing the qualities he has requested: proven experience and influential characters capable of correcting the weaknesses behind last season’s 10th-place Premier League finish.
