Coach branded Maddy Cusack a liar to FA, inquest hears

The inquiry was informed that Morgan had submitted details of his connection with Cusack to the Football Association during the investigation that followed her passing.

Answering questions from Dean Armstrong KC, who is acting on behalf of Cusack’s relatives, Morgan stated: “Looking at what has happened since Maddy died, I sincerely believe the picture painted of her emotional condition has not been true to reality or properly represented.

“As for the remark about falsehoods, it came in the wake of events after Maddy’s death. It became clear that she had chosen not to share certain things with her family and others, things I had stood by her through.”

He remarked to the assistant coroner, Sophie Cartwright KC, that a considerable portion of the narrative had been “one-sided”.

When asked about his manner of speaking to Cusack, Morgan replied: “At no point did I yell at Maddy Cusack while at Sheffield United.

“I never once directed a shout at Maddy during our time at Leicester City.

“Maddy’s departure from Leicester in the January window was not something I desired, and I doubt it was what she wanted either.”

Addressing queries about Cusack’s limited game time after his appointment, Morgan explained to the hearing that she was still working her way back from a foot problem when he first took charge of team selection.

The inquest was told that the midfielder had completed an entire 90-minute match the week prior to his arrival.

He went on to say that, owing to the strong displays of other squad members, she only featured in his fourth match at the helm.

Morgan rejected the idea that he was aiming to diminish her standing by leaving her out, stressing once more that she was regaining fitness from an injury picked up before he joined the club.
