Cristiano Ronaldo: Football Legend Driven by 1,000-Goal Quest and Portugal Glory

News

Cristiano Ronaldo contemplated retirement following the World Cup, but chose to continue his remarkable career because he feels he can still contribute to Portugal’s success while pursuing the landmark of 1,000 career goals.

The 41-year-old announced during the summer that the 2026 World Cup would be his final appearance at the tournament, though questions remained about his plans beyond it.

Ronaldo has now been selected in Jorge Jesus’ 25-player Portugal squad for the Nations League campaign, which starts with a match against Wales in Lisbon on Thursday evening.

Before facing Craig Bellamy’s team, the Al-Nassr striker also set his sights on scoring the 21 additional goals required to reach the historic total of 1,000.

When asked whether he had considered ending his international career after the World Cup, Ronaldo replied: “Yes, it crossed my mind.

“Naturally, I regularly reflect on my choices, my future and my current situation. I like to consider everything carefully.”

The former Sporting, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus forward said: “I spoke with our president and our coach. I continue to believe I can help the national side achieve its objectives.

“I feel I can support the team not only by scoring goals, but also through what I contribute away from the pitch.”

Having already won the Nations League twice with Portugal, Ronaldo said securing the trophy for a third time remains an important target alongside his individual ambitions.

“The two objectives matter equally,” he said.

“Reaching 1,000 goals is one target, while succeeding with the national team is another. The Nations League begins tomorrow [Thursday], marking the start of a fresh chapter.”
