Northern Ireland defender Dan Ballard believes the team possess “plenty of quality and determination” as they get ready for four demanding Nations League fixtures.
Ballard returns to international duty after a hamstring problem ruled him out of April’s World Cup play-off semi-final loss to Italy and the June friendlies against Guinea and France.
The 27-year-old has performed well for Sunderland this season and, following a difficult period away from the pitch, is eager to represent his country once more.
“This camp offers an excellent chance for players who have not featured regularly, as there should certainly be opportunities available,” Ballard said.
“Several new and younger players have joined the group, and we are looking forward to seeing what they can offer.
“At times, we overlook just how strong this group is. When you watch training, you see many determined players competing for a place. There is still plenty of work ahead, but the squad has considerable ability and ambition.”
Following an adjustment to the international calendar, Northern Ireland are set to contest four matches during one window for the first time since 2022.
Michael O’Neill’s team visit Georgia on 25 September before hosting Hungary three days later. They will then travel to Slovakia to play Ukraine, followed by a home fixture against Georgia on 5 October.
Although the schedule includes four matches across only 11 days, Ballard is confident the team will be properly prepared.
“The players now have enough experience, with many competing in the Championship and League One, where busy schedules are common,” he said.
“I am fortunate to be playing European football with Sunderland this season, so adapting to a demanding schedule is necessary. These four matches could be very valuable for us.
“The fixtures arrive in quick succession, so we must prepare as thoroughly as possible. It will test us both mentally and physically, but playing matches is what we enjoy, and I am confident we will be ready.”
