Europa Cup: Impressive Hammarby End Rangers’ Dreams

News

Rangers were eliminated from the Europa Cup after last season’s runners-up Hammarby earned a 3-0 win at Broadwood Stadium, completing a 5-0 aggregate triumph.

The team occupying second place in Sweden’s 2026 top division needed just 13 minutes to increase their advantage from the opening leg.

Defender Mathilde Janzen delivered an excellent pass behind the defence to Anna Walter, who guided her shot beyond the onrushing Jenna Fife.

Rangers created their first opportunity in the 21st minute, but forward Laura Berry directed her attempt at goalkeeper Cajsa Andersson.

Hammarby could have strengthened their position before half-time, although Icelandic striker Ida Hermannsdottir and midfielder Elin Sorum both missed opportunities from nearby.

Despite controlling plenty of the ball, the Scottish Women’s Premier League leaders did not threaten again until the 58th minute, when Berry once more shot directly at Andersson.

Hermannsdottir effectively settled the contest two minutes later, moving smoothly onto an outstanding through pass and producing another composed finish for the previous season’s Swedish league runners-up.

Sixteen-year-old midfielder Fanny Peterson sealed the convincing result, following up her goal in the first leg by reacting quickly after Fife had blocked Svea Rehnberg’s effort from close range.

The result brought Scotland’s involvement in Europe’s second-level tournament to an end, following champions Heart of Midlothian’s earlier loss to Real Sociedad.
