Freiburg passed up the opportunity to reclaim first place in the Bundesliga after drawing 2-2 away to Eintracht Frankfurt. Bayern Munich’s emphatic 7-0 victory against Union Berlin on Friday had moved the Bavarian club above Freiburg, who surrendered points for the first time this campaign and stayed in second position.
Several recent additions to Germany coach Jürgen Klopp’s 44-player squad impressed during an entertaining contest. Younes Ebnoutalib completed a flowing Frankfurt move to open the scoring in the 10th minute, only days after receiving his unexpected first call-up to the national team.
Derry Scherhant, another relatively unfamiliar name in Klopp’s expanded squad, equalised for Freiburg before Jonathan Burkardt restored Frankfurt’s advantage. Scherhant then set up Yuito Suzuki for Freiburg’s second goal, securing a point that left them level with Harry Kane’s Bayern on 10 points.
West Ham loanee Niclas Füllkrug maintained his excellent form following his return to Germany, scoring in a third consecutive Bundesliga appearance as Werder Bremen recovered from a two-goal deficit to defeat Augsburg 3-2 at home. Füllkrug made it level with a powerful long-range strike in the 86th minute before Mitchell Weiser fired home the winning goal during stoppage time.
In another match, Hamburg claimed their opening goal, victory and points of the campaign with a convincing 2-1 home success against Cologne. Albert Gronbaek provided the assists for Nicolas Capaldo and Yussuf Poulsen, helping one of German football’s traditional giants move away from the foot of the standings.
Hamburg moved above Borussia Moenchengladbach, who suffered a fourth successive loss in a dramatic 4-3 home defeat to Mainz. Shortly after dismissing coach Eugen Polanski, the hosts endured another difficult result. Gladbach also failed to convert a penalty and remain the only Bundesliga team without a point after four rounds.
