Football Calendar: Elite 55-Game Seasons Deemed ‘Unsustainable’

However, Dr James believes the thrill of playing dozens of matches each season is short-lived. The increased risk of injury and the pressure to perform continuously at an elite level can lead to much more serious emotional lows.

He says some players rely on coping strategies, including the use of snus, to maintain their concentration.

“Football still does not fully recognise how much physical and psychological recovery players require,” he said.

“Players must be allowed to live as ordinary people. Mentally switching off becomes far more difficult when fixtures are packed closely together. Genuine recovery requires time away from professional duties.

“Heavy physical demands may result in additional injuries, which can also cause significant psychological harm. This creates further anxiety, with players questioning their identity when they cannot compete and worrying about their contracts.

“Education is essential. Feeling positive while playing frequently does not necessarily mean the schedule is beneficial. Players may believe their bodies can handle consecutive matches while still becoming mentally exhausted.

“Clubs should do more to teach players about the value of rest. They need to clearly explain why taking time away from football is worthwhile.”

Dr Richardson says the quality of player support varies between clubs, highlighting Brentford’s well-established sports psychology department as a positive example.

Yet the arrival of the Club World Cup, the possible expansion of the World Cup and the absence of any plans to reduce fixtures in the Premier League, domestic cup tournaments or European competitions leave no obvious solution.

“Players have very little influence over the schedule. As recent cases have shown, some will ultimately choose to withdraw,” Dr Richardson said.

“That lack of control is challenging, as is the fear that refusing to participate could cost them their position or future opportunities. On the other hand, continuing to play may lead to injury and the same outcome.

“Whichever option they choose, they risk suffering negative consequences.”
