Former England footballer Andy Carroll has identified television dance coach Kevin Adams as the man who sexually assaulted him in 2021, according to an interview with the Sun newspaper.
The 37-year-old forward initially disclosed the assault in his autobiography, Owning It, released last month, but did not identify the perpetrator in the book.
Adams, who featured in the television talent show Fame Academy in 2002, received a prison sentence for the offence in 2023, according to reports.
A jury convicted him after a trial in September 2023, and Chelmsford Crown Court sentenced him to 20 months in prison the following November.
The newspaper reported that Carroll chose to identify Adams after learning that the offender’s name already appeared in court records accessible to the public.
Carroll previously explained that a friend of his former partner assaulted him while he slept after visiting his home to watch a boxing match. At the time, Carroll was playing for Newcastle United, the club he supported as a child.
He said he awoke during the assault and forced the attacker out of his home, later knocking him unconscious when he attempted to get back inside.
In his autobiography, Carroll said he had spent considerable time deciding whether to include the experience, adding that he avoided his publisher for so long they may have thought he had changed his mind.
He wrote that discussing the incident was frightening but that it had shaped him just as much as the positive moments in his life. He added that speaking out would be worthwhile if it helped even one person.
From the late 1990s onward, Adams appeared on television several times as both a dancer and a dance instructor.
Adams has made no public statement since Carroll identified him as his attacker.
