Former West Ham and QPR goalkeeper Ludek Miklosko has passed away aged 64 after living with cancer. He represented both Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic at international level.
Miklosko moved from Baník Ostrava to West Ham in 1990 following a trial, with the transfer costing £300,000. During his first campaign, he helped the team earn promotion to the top flight. He made 373 appearances before departing in 1998 to join QPR, initially on loan.
After retiring at QPR in 2001, Miklosko returned to West Ham and served as a goalkeeping coach until 2010. He subsequently worked for a sports agency and later became a board member and sporting director at Baník Ostrava.
West Ham said Miklosko would always have a cherished place within the club’s community, remembering him as an admired and inspiring goalkeeper as well as a kind and gentle man.
Miklosko earned 40 appearances for Czechoslovakia and another two for the Czech Republic during an international career that started in 1982. In 2024, he announced his decision to stop receiving cancer treatment.
In a statement released through West Ham, his son Martin Miklosko said the family was devastated by his death but deeply grateful for the tremendous support he had received. He added that they found comfort in knowing his father was now at peace and free from pain.
Martin added that his father had a profound love for West Ham United and particularly enjoyed hearing supporters sing his name at matches. He thanked the club and its fans, saying they had become—and would always remain—an important part of the family.
