Spanish midfielder Gavi thinks Argentina’s Leandro Paredes ought not to be banned for his role in the post-World Cup final clash.
As Spain rejoiced after their 1-0 victory, it seemed that Argentine players Paredes, Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada and assistant coach Roberto Ayala were all caught up in the on-field melee.
Paredes appeared to shove Spain’s Eric Garcia by the neck, and when unused substitute Gavi attempted to step in, he was knocked down by Almada.
Paredes sent the Barcelona midfielder to the ground by placing his hand in the Spanish player’s face.
Fifa has assigned a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to review the incident; any player or coach implicated might face a ban, and the Argentine Football Association could be hit with a fine as well.
“I do not believe [Paredes] deserves a suspension,” Gavi stated to El Partidazo de COPE., external
“I realize it sets a poor example for youngsters, but I feel that is also part of football—a more physical, aggressive aspect.
“The most sensible action would have been to give him a red card during the game, and leave it at that. Ultimately, I think it’s just part of the sport and that’s how it should be.”
