Ian Murray Departs Greenock Morton with Club Bottom of Scottish Championship

News

Greenock Morton have parted company with manager Ian Murray after the team fell to the bottom of the Scottish Championship.

First-team coach Bill Orr has also left Cappielow, with players Michael O’Halloran and Gary Miller appointed to oversee the squad on a temporary basis.

Morton have collected only one point from their first eight league matches, leaving them three points behind Queen’s Park in ninth place. The Greenock club will welcome Raith Rovers on Saturday.

Financial problems involving one of the club’s sponsors have also affected Morton’s budget and their ability to recruit players this season.

Murray, 45, previously played for Hibernian, Rangers and Scotland before managing Dumbarton, St Mirren, Airdrieonians and Raith Rovers. He arrived at Cappielow in January and recorded four victories across 29 matches.

A club representative confirmed that Murray had been removed from his role as first-team manager with immediate effect, while coach Bill Orr had also been released from his position.

The club expressed its gratitude to Murray and Orr for the dedication, effort and professionalism they showed during their time at Morton, while wishing both men success in the future.

Morton also acknowledged the frustration among supporters and emphasised how significant the coming weeks will be.
