Athletic Club striker Inaki Williams has confirmed that he is stepping away from international football with Ghana.
The 32-year-old registered two goals across 28 appearances for the Black Stars after earning his first cap in September 2022.
He represented the West African nation at the 2022 and 2026 Fifa World Cups, as well as the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
Williams played in two matches at this year’s World Cup, where Ghana’s campaign ended with a last-32 defeat against Colombia.
In a social media statement, he explained that he believed the right moment had arrived to conclude his career with Ghana’s national team.
He said he was departing with happiness, pride and the reassurance that he had always given his best whenever he wore the national shirt.
Born in Bilbao to Ghanaian parents, Williams decided to play for the Black Stars after previously representing Spain at youth level and appearing in a senior friendly in 2016.
His younger brother Nico, also an Athletic Club player, opted to represent Spain and later helped La Roja win both the World Cup and the European Championship.
Williams confirmed his decision one week after Carlos Queiroz was announced as Ghana’s returning coach ahead of the 2027 Afcon in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
He reflected that representing Ghana had brought him rewards extending far beyond the sport itself.
Williams added that the experience enabled him to reconnect with home, strengthen his relationship with his heritage and feel immense pride while representing the country.
He expressed his sincere gratitude to everyone involved in his international journey and thanked supporters for the affection they had consistently shown him.
Williams said Ghana would forever remain close to him and promised to keep supporting the Black Stars from wherever he may be.
