Sources indicate that some people sympathise with Mateta despite the disagreement over his contract. There is a belief that the forward may have received poor advice, although supporters on social media have generally shown him much less understanding.
Employment lawyer Libby Payne explained: “A case could be made that the option’s conditions are fundamentally unfair and should therefore be considered invalid. However, the legal standard is demanding, and arguments of this kind are rarely successful.”
With only eight days remaining before the transfer window closes, it is reasonable to question whether this previously successful relationship is approaching its end.
Several competing clubs are reportedly interested ahead of the deadline. Aston Villa are believed to be among Mateta’s admirers, particularly as uncertainty surrounds Ollie Watkins’ future at the Midlands side.
Regardless of his attempts to establish a different position, Mateta remains under contract for another 10 months.
This detail carries considerable importance for several reasons.
If Palace want to receive a transfer fee for Mateta before he can agree a Bosman pre-contract with a foreign club in January, the current window represents their final chance to sell him.
Officials at Palace will be fully aware of that situation, and some figures within the club believe the two parties should go their separate ways in the coming days.
However, Mateta is less than a year away from becoming a free agent, a scenario that would probably offer him greater financial rewards than a transfer this month. It would therefore be understandable if he felt no urgency to leave.
Palace have tried to reach an agreement with Mateta over a new contract during the past year, but those efforts have been unsuccessful.
Although a contract extension cannot be ruled out entirely, a change of heart from Mateta now appears highly unlikely after the steps he has taken to challenge the validity of his present deal.
Palace are expected to at least consider bids for Mateta, whose conduct suggests that he sees his long-term future away from Selhurst Park.
