Harry Kane expressed confidence that Thomas Tuchel will draw lessons from England’s World Cup semifinal loss to Argentina, and stressed the need to utilize the upcoming Nations League matches to build experience against elite opposition.
Kane remained on the bench as England secured third place with a thrilling 6-4 win over France on Saturday – marking their highest World Cup finish away from home. Tuchel, who agreed to a contract extension ahead of the competition, faced sharp criticism for his tactical approach against Argentina, shifting to a back five in an attempt to protect a 1-0 advantage.
Kane acknowledged that England came up short against Lionel Scaloni’s squad, yet hailed the atmosphere Tuchel has fostered since taking over from Gareth Southgate in 2025, calling it “the most tightly-knit England camp I have ever experienced.”
The captain remarked: “I realize there are many doubts following that match. As players, we must digest it, and I’m certain the manager will do the same. This is his first major championship. He’ll absorb a great deal from the squad, the conditions, the intensity, the travel.
“We as players can also take many lessons from that evening. Right now, it’s about coming to terms with it all. We showed plenty of positives and overcame many difficult moments. This squad is remarkable, the most united England group I’ve been involved with. The head coach played a huge role in building that.
“Supporters will be frustrated, and we understand that fully. This is a major competition, which is why we dare to dream so boldly. When things don’t fall into place, you have to accept the backlash. We are all ready to do that – to keep chasing the ultimate prize. We recognize that for the next two years until we encounter that scenario again, doubts will linger. That’s something we must embrace and turn into motivation.”
England lacked regular exposure to elite rivals ahead of the World Cup, having dropped out of the top Nations League tier in 2022 during Southgate’s tenure. Promoted back in 2024, they are set to meet Spain, Croatia, and Czechia, beginning with a rematch of the Euro 2024 final against Luis de la Fuente’s team on 26 September at Wembley. Following the victory over France – though it was a largely inconsequential match – Kane believes England must approach the Nations League with full commitment to succeed at future tournaments.
“The way we played in the final half-hour against Argentina is not who we aim to be,” he stated. “We’ve spent much of the past two years discussing how to seize control in those moments. The reality is we still ended up defeated. It’s simple to move on and talk, but we must improve at handling those scenarios in real time. Training sessions and qualifying matches can help … but I believe the Nations League will be crucial, facing sides like Spain and Croatia, major opponents.
“Adapting to those high-pressure settings and producing our top performance against such teams, similar to how we played France even if the game wasn’t decisive, is vital. We need to keep learning and getting better. The manager will certainly have grown from these experiences. I can speak at length, but ultimately, it’s about demonstrating change the next time we face a similar test.”
Kane has tasted defeat in two World Cup semifinals and two European Championship finals, and he is convinced that Tuchel is the right figure to guide England over the final hurdle.
“The passion he shows, the feeling he transmits, his tactical knowledge … that doesn’t guarantee perfection every time. We aim to deliver when it matters most, and he holds himself to that same standard. He is an outstanding coach. He instilled belief not just in the squad but across the whole nation that this was our moment. That’s what makes this heartbreak sharper than before – because so many were convinced we would go the distance.
“Everyone needs time to absorb what happened. The manager has to go through his own process. We are still in a period of mourning, emotionally raw, and that will continue for several weeks. It won’t be until we gather again that we’ll start to consider what lies ahead and set new goals. As captain, I’ll talk with the manager, the players, and the staff to identify how we can improve.”
