Paris Saint-Germain winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is set to have surgery after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the Champions League victory against Barcelona.
The Georgian international injured his knee in PSG’s 4-2 win on Tuesday. He received assistance while leaving the field shortly before the hour mark and was unable to place any weight on his right leg.
Kvaratskhelia appeared to land badly after racing back to challenge Xavi Espart. He was visibly in considerable pain and immediately grabbed his right knee. The winger played a major part in PSG securing consecutive Champions League trophies and is among the candidates for the Ballon d’Or, which will be presented on Monday.
Ousmane Dembélé had already departed because of a thigh problem, while defender Marquinhos was later replaced after suffering a similar issue. PSG confirmed that both players would receive treatment over the coming weeks.
PSG manager Luis Enrique carefully managed Dembélé’s playing time in the French league last season and has left him out of two Ligue 1 matches during the current campaign. The France attacker, who scored six times at the World Cup, endured several fitness problems last season and was frequently affected by leg muscle injuries while playing for his former club Barcelona.
During the 2024-25 campaign, Dembélé reached 50 appearances in a single season for the first time in his career, with his displays earning him the men’s Ballon d’Or.
