French striker Kylian Mbappe has labeled a Paraguayan lawmaker as “disgraceful” and unfit for office after she posted racist remarks targeting his background and schooling.
Celeste Amarilla, a member of Paraguay’s Authentic Radical Liberal Party, shared her comments on the social media platform X following her nation’s loss to France in the World Cup round of 16.
Mbappe fired back, external: “Ms. Celeste Amarilla, you are a shameful woman who does not deserve the role you hold.
“You do not speak for Paraguay, a nation that poured passion and pride into this tournament.
“Your carelessness and blatant racism have ensured the world forgets the remarkable journey and historic achievement your players delivered at this World Cup, overshadowing it with the presence of an incompetent individual who projects the worst possible image of her country.
“I will never give people like her the freedom to spread their venom and prejudice across the globe.”
Mbappe converted the decisive penalty in the second half of Saturday’s contest, securing a quarter-final meeting with Morocco in Boston on Thursday.
With seven goals, Mbappe stands as the joint leading scorer in this year’s competition, tied with Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Norway’s Erling Haaland.
Amarilla’s outburst follows similar sentiments from former Paraguay goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert, who claimed ahead of Saturday’s match that his national side was up against “a team from Africa”.
Those words prompted a reply from French football federation president Philippe Diallo, who branded Chilavert a “disgrace”.
“I condemn in the strongest possible terms the racist comments made by Jose Luis Chilavert against the French national team, which strike at the core values of respect, brotherhood, and diversity in our sport,” Diallo stated.
“While he may have once been a great goalkeeper, this individual has now descended into ignominy.”
