Ferguson, whose deal runs through 2028 and includes an option for an additional season, has completed every minute of Bologna’s opening five Serie A matches this campaign.
His father, Derek, and his uncle, Barry, both represented Rangers, while Barry also served as the club’s captain and later had a spell in charge at Ibrox.
After taking over as Rangers manager in July, Derek McInnes acknowledged the clear connection with Ferguson, whom he previously coached at Aberdeen.
Speaking about his relationship with Rangers, Ferguson said: “Everyone knows I supported the club growing up and that my family has strong ties to it.
“Playing there was one of my childhood ambitions, and that feeling remains, but it would not be right to discuss it while I am representing Bologna.
“Nobody can predict what will happen later in my career. It may become a reality or it may not, but the possibility has always remained in my thoughts.”
