Lionel Messi revealed on Wednesday that he is uncertain about carrying on with his career after losing his father last week.
His father, Jorge Messi, died at the age of 68 following a prolonged illness at a medical facility in Rosario, Argentina.
“I do not know how life will be without you or how I am supposed to move ahead. Football has always been my entire world, but now I am seriously questioning how much longer I can continue,” Messi wrote in an Instagram tribute.
“You supported me from the very start, and we were so close to reaching the end together. I wish you could have stayed with me a little longer.”
Jorge remained closely involved throughout his son’s football journey, from Messi’s formative years at Barcelona onward. He was a vital source of guidance and also represented him for several years.
The 39-year-old Argentina captain said his father’s desire to see him participate was one of the main reasons he competed at the World Cup, where Argentina lost to Spain after extra time in the final.
“You always wanted me to take part in my final World Cup, but your health deteriorated only days before it began,” Messi said. “It was the first tournament you could not attend. After every game, I kept looking for a message from you and hoping one would arrive. That was when I truly understood the seriousness of what was happening.”
Messi endured conflicting emotions during the competition. After completing a hat-trick in Argentina’s opening game against Algeria, he broke down in tears while celebrating his first goal.
He later said the emotional reaction came from personal circumstances rather than football, explaining that he had recently faced several painful and challenging days.
Messi said he had hoped to win the final in his father’s honour, but he no longer had the strength required to secure another World Cup trophy.
“My legs had nothing more to give. I pushed beyond what my body could handle, but it was not enough, and I never felt fully fit. We did not become champions, yet we treasured every game. As you had told me, taking part and experiencing it was the right decision,” Messi added.
Despite his sorrow, the Inter Miami forward promised to preserve his father’s legacy in the way he raises his own children.
“I will miss you deeply, but your influence will always remain with us, particularly in how I bring up my children. I will pass on the same lessons and values that you gave me,” he said.
