Bruno Fernandes commanded the spotlight throughout a landmark evening at Croke Park.
A capacity crowd produced one of its loudest reactions after an hour of Manchester United’s pre-season meeting with Leeds. Fernandes was announced among five players introduced by head coach Michael Carrick during the first football match between English clubs staged at the 82,500-seat home of the Gaelic Athletic Association.
The stadium might have erupted had Fernandes not seen one attempt disallowed for offside, while another strike from outside the penalty area clipped the crossbar instead of finding the net.
The admiration became disruptive when several supporters entered the field one after another in search of selfies. With the situation becoming increasingly difficult to control and 90 minutes completed, officials ended the match without stoppage time and proceeded directly to a penalty shootout.
Fernandes surprisingly failed to convert his penalty, but Noussair Mazraoui remained composed to seal a 5-4 shootout win after the match had ended early with the score at 1-1.
The final score mattered far less than building fitness and readiness for the forthcoming campaign.
Nevertheless, the reception Fernandes received demonstrated his exceptional standing among United supporters. That reputation was already firmly established before his nine goals and record-breaking 21 assists helped the team finish third in the Premier League last season and return to the Champions League.
No other member of United’s squad appears to inspire the same level of devotion from the club’s fans.
However, after months of uncertainty over the 31-year-old’s future last summer following a lucrative proposal from Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal, United’s determination to retain him may soon face another challenge.
Italian giants Juventus and AC Milan, along with Galatasaray, are reportedly interested in the Portuguese playmaker, whose contract includes a £57m release clause for clubs outside England.
United’s response to any formal approach remains uncertain. Fernandes revealed last December that he felt “hurt” when club officials told him the decision over accepting Al-Hilal’s proposal was his to make.
His current deal has now reached its final year, although United can extend it for another season, and the two parties have yet to settle terms for a replacement contract.
Fernandes is believed to favour remaining at United, possibly until the end of his playing career. During the club’s previous trip to the Republic of Ireland in April, he expressed his desire to challenge for silverware, and that ambition is understood to remain unchanged.
Yet United are also trying to control their salary costs. Fernandes could reasonably argue that his performances justify a substantial pay increase, particularly with returning player Marcus Rashford currently occupying the position of the club’s highest earner.
The situation could therefore leave United’s leadership facing a complicated issue with no straightforward solution.
Carrick, in particular, will be eager to retain the former Sporting midfielder.
Fernandes is already showing encouraging signs of developing an effective partnership with recent signing Youri Tielemans.
Tielemans created the opportunity that ended with his captain striking the crossbar. The Belgian midfielder’s short pass highlighted the growing connection between the pair, which he also discussed while addressing reporters on Tuesday.
