Man Utd unveils new stadium site just 350 metres from Old Trafford

The site for Manchester United’s proposed new 100,000-capacity stadium has been disclosed, positioned around 350 metres northwest of the current Old Trafford venue.

During the previous month, the top-flight side purchased a 25-acre plot intended for the new arena—an area presently occupied in part by a go-karting facility.

Renderings were released on Thursday for the first occasion, forming part of a multi-billion-pound preliminary masterplan for the wider regeneration of the Old Trafford district, set to be named Trafford Wharfside.

The visuals do not feature the tridents or the canopy—the bold ‘circus tent’ design—revealed by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in March 2025, but club representatives maintain that concept has not been abandoned.

The illustrated proposals, which could involve demolishing the well-known Lou Macari’s fish and chip shop at the top of Sir Matt Busby Way, represent an outline of potential construction and are not yet finalized.

The eventual appearance of the stadium will be determined in the subsequent round of planning conversations.

“Over the coming weeks, we will examine the stadium’s design,” stated Collette Roche, the executive leading United’s new stadium project.

“We anticipate having something to present by the close of this year or the start of the next.”

When asked about a potential completion date, Roche did not provide a timeline.

“We are not going to set a specific date. Our priority is to ensure it is done properly.”

United further noted that no determination has been reached concerning what will happen to the existing Old Trafford ground.

The 150-hectare Trafford Wharfside scheme would establish a new community featuring 15,000 homes, with projections suggesting it could generate 48,000 jobs in the area.
