Matildas forward Mary Fowler will miss the forthcoming friendly fixtures against Germany and Haiti because of personal matters.
Football Australia announced on Tuesday morning that Fowler would be unavailable for the international window. Charlton midfielder Leah Davidson, who has made four appearances for Australia, has been selected as her replacement.
Football Australia said Fowler had withdrawn from the October international window for personal reasons after discussions involving the player, Manchester City and Matildas officials.
Her withdrawal represents a significant setback for coach Joe Montemurro before the two key warm-up matches.
The 23-year-old has impressed for Manchester City and was expected to have an influential role in both fixtures as one of Australia’s leading creative attackers.
Australia will also be missing prominent midfielder Kyra Cooney-Cross during this international period.
Fowler’s partner, rugby league player Nathan Cleary, is recuperating in Australia following surgery on the serious ankle injury he sustained during the Panthers’ preliminary-final defeat by the Knights. He also underwent an operation for a stress fracture in his right foot and is expected to face an extended recovery.
The match against Germany in Karlsruhe on Saturday AEDT and the meeting with Haiti in Chambly next Wednesday will provide important preparation for next year’s World Cup.
Montemurro has sought opportunities to assess the Matildas against teams offering different styles and challenges.
Third-ranked Germany will present a formidable test, while 47th-ranked Haiti can call upon Melchie Dumornay, Ellie Carpenter’s former Lyon teammate and one of the game’s most dangerous attacking players.
Davidson, 25, earns her opportunity after leaving Melbourne City during the off-season to join newly promoted Charlton in England’s top division. The midfielder has recorded four international appearances and one goal since making her debut.
All members of the squad play abroad except Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Courtney Newbon. Newbon, Hana Lowry and Tori Tumeth are the only players yet to make their senior international debuts.
