The New England Revolution have condemned chants described by the club as “antisemitic” and “discriminatory” during Saturday’s MLS match against CF Montréal in Quebec. The chants targeted Israeli forward Dor Turgeman, with broadcast microphones picking up supporters shouting “free Palestine” shortly before he scored.
MLS confirmed on Monday that it had received reports of antisemitic and discriminatory language aimed at a New England Revolution player and had opened an investigation into the incident.
In a statement released on Monday afternoon, the Revolution said they firmly opposed the antisemitic and discriminatory abuse directed at Turgeman by CF Montréal supporters. The club added that it reported the incident to the league immediately, was cooperating fully with the investigation and hoped those responsible would face appropriate consequences.
The incident attracted further attention because of Turgeman’s reaction. In the 36th minute, the 22-year-old scored from close range to give New England a 2-0 lead. After finding the net, he stood before the home supporters with his arms extended while sections of the crowd jeered and gestured toward him. He then placed a hand near his ear and walked across the front of the stand, with the goal separating him from the spectators. The game eventually finished 2-2.
Montréal announced on Sunday that it would examine what happened at Stade Saputo.
The club said it does not accept discrimination or hateful conduct in any form. It added that the allegations were being treated seriously and that it was working with MLS and the New England Revolution to determine the facts and decide what action should follow.
Following the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, MLS prohibited Israeli and Palestinian flags at league venues, although exceptions may apply when an Israeli or Palestinian player is included on a team’s roster. Columbus Crew supporters, for instance, were permitted to display the Palestinian flag after Palestine international Wessam Abou Ali joined the club in August 2025, while the wider league restriction remained in effect.
In February 2025, the league criticized Los Angeles FC investor Ruben Gnanalingam over alleged anti-Israel messages posted on LinkedIn. The Malaysian businessman later apologized and continues to hold an ownership stake in the club.
