Morgan Rogers has completed a transfer to Chelsea from Aston Villa worth £117m, committing to a seven-year contract that makes him the most expensive purchase in the Blues’ history.
The move was sealed on Saturday, with Chelsea moving swiftly to land the 23-year-old ahead of Arsenal, who had been in discussions and were considered frontrunners to sign the England international.
Sources suggest that the prospect of playing under new Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso was a decisive element in swaying Rogers, who has just returned from England’s third-place finish at the World Cup, to pick west London.
He was in the starting lineup for the 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina in Atlanta last Wednesday and also began the 6-4 win over France on Saturday that secured bronze. Speaking to his new club’s official platform, he said: “I’m so excited. For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid.
“I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading. That’s why I’m here and I can’t wait to get started.”
A flexible forward who answers Chelsea’s need for a player able to fill various attacking positions, he enjoyed a meteoric rise at Villa Park after joining from Middlesbrough in January 2024, helping propel Villa to a top-four league finish and Europa League qualification last season.
He leaves Villa with 31 goals from 125 appearances during his time under Unai Emery.
The transfer ranks among the most eye-catching of the BlueCo ownership’s four years at the helm. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali signaled towards the close of last season that the club had taken stock of a lacklustre campaign in which they finished 10th and were eliminated emphatically from the Champions League last 16 by Paris Saint-Germain, and that they would pursue signings capable of mounting a title push.
Alonso, a former Real Madrid midfielder and a two-time Champions League winner as a player, was recruited in part to help lure the right level of talent to Chelsea.
The Rogers deal arguably represents the club’s most substantial coup since Cole Palmer arrived from Manchester City in 2023. He becomes the fourth summer recruit as the Blues remodel their squad, following defender Marco Palestra, striker Emmanuel Emegha and winger Geovany Quenda.
In June, the club was unsuccessful in an effort to bring Sunderland’s Granit Xhaka back together with Alonso, as Chelsea declined to meet the Black Cats’ price for a player who will be 34 in September.
