Nations League: Why Is Northern Ireland Facing Ukraine in Slovakia?

News

Northern Ireland will face Ukraine in the UEFA Nations League on Friday, 2 October at the Anton Malatinsky Stadium in Trnava, Slovakia.

Ukraine have staged their home fixtures abroad since Russia launched its invasion of the country in February 2022. Matches have been held at venues in nations including the Czech Republic, Poland, Spain and Germany.

The Anton Malatinsky Stadium has also served as a home venue for Ukraine, including their 1-0 victory over Malta in June 2023 during qualification for the 2024 European Championship.

UEFA allows Ukraine to stage their fixtures at any venue they select, as long as the stadium meets the organisation’s requirements.

The meeting with Northern Ireland will be the third of Ukraine’s four fixtures during this international window. They secured a 1-0 win in Hungary on Friday and will travel to face Georgia on Monday.

Ukraine will then take on Northern Ireland before hosting Hungary in Trnava.

Ukraine are also scheduled to welcome Georgia during November’s international fixtures, with that game set to be played in Trnava as well.

Ukrainian clubs have likewise regularly played their home fixtures outside the country in recent seasons.

This season, reigning domestic champions Shakhtar Donetsk are due to stage their home Champions League games at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge.
