Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is reportedly preparing to depart the club immediately.
Howe faced growing scrutiny last season after Newcastle ended their Premier League campaign in 12th place, having suffered 17 defeats across 38 matches.
The 48-year-old’s last game at the helm was Wednesday’s pre-season friendly, which ended in a 4-1 loss to Bristol City.
Al-Ahli head coach Matthias Jaissle is widely expected to take over from Howe.
Howe took charge of Newcastle in November 2021, one month after the Saudi Public Investment Fund completed its purchase of the club.
Sources familiar with the situation suggest Howe was somewhat surprised by Newcastle’s transfer activity this summer, although he understood that player sales were necessary.
Earlier in the year, Howe had chosen to stay at St James’ Park despite expecting players to be sold, but his position shifted during the summer.
In March, Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson stated that the club was not considering discussions about replacing the manager at that time.
