Foden was in England’s starting line-up when they lost the 2024 European Championship final to Spain, but Thomas Tuchel did not select him for the 2026 World Cup squad.
The Three Lions advanced to the tournament’s semi-finals before suffering a 2-1 defeat against Argentina. Foden admitted that watching the players emerge for the national anthem ahead of matches was difficult.
Foden revealed that Maresca contacted him after he was omitted from Tuchel’s squad.
Foden said: “He [Maresca] got in touch shortly afterwards to ask if I was all right. It was a very thoughtful gesture and showed what kind of person he is.
“He looks out for every player and is eager to build a strong relationship with the squad.”
Foden endured a challenging campaign last season because of personal difficulties and an ankle problem, but he now says he is “completely fit”.
When questioned about Foden’s place in the side, Maresca said: “Phil is just as important as every other player. I have known him for several years, so I understand the quality he possesses.
“My responsibility is to help him return to the version of Phil that everyone wants to see.
“Above all, he needs to feel happy and take pleasure in playing football. When he is in a good place, he can help us compete for trophies.”
Maresca’s first match in charge of City will be Saturday’s friendly against Inter Milan in Hong Kong.
Although City have lost the experience and expertise of Guardiola, captain Bernardo Silva and England defender John Stones, Foden believes the team can accomplish “incredible things” next season.
Speaking in Hong Kong at the unveiling of the club’s new Puma away strip, Foden said: “I believe we are capable of winning every competition, although doing so will clearly be difficult. We still have an exceptional squad.”
