St Johnstone were eliminated from the Premier Sports Cup after East Fife struck a dramatic equaliser in stoppage time, while Premiership rivals Dundee United narrowly advanced when Montrose missed their opportunity at home against Spartans.
Montrose needed only a draw to reach the last 16 as Group B winners, but the League 1 club suffered a 2-0 home defeat against opponents from the division below.
St Johnstone required a victory to retain any hope of qualifying as one of the strongest runners-up, but they ultimately placed third behind Inverness Caledonian Thistle and East Fife, with neither of those sides reaching the knockout phase either.
Aberdeen, Ayr United, Kilmarnock, Ross County and Stenhousemuir qualify alongside United and Caley Thistle as group winners.
Dundee and Partick Thistle have also advanced as two of the three highest-ranked runners-up.
Sunday’s fixtures will determine the remaining group winner and the final qualifying runner-up.
St Mirren will secure first place in Group C if they avoid losing at home to Dunfermline Athletic.
A Dunfermline victory would guarantee their qualification, either as group winners or runners-up, because their goal difference would surpass Queen’s Park.
