James Penrice has described his loan move to Rangers from Greek title holders AEK Athens as “slightly unreal”, with the Ibrox side retaining an option to make the transfer permanent.
The 27-year-old Scottish left-back previously represented Livingston and Hearts in his home country, following earlier periods with Partick Thistle and East Fife.
Penrice joined the Greek top division from Hearts last summer. He made 32 appearances, including 16 starts, as AEK Athens overcame defending champions Olympiacos to claim a 14th domestic championship.
The defender has accumulated more than 300 senior club appearances. His arrival comes while fellow left-back Tuur Rommens is expected to miss up to seven weeks because of a groin problem.
The transfer remains dependent on international approval. Rangers are next due to host St Mirren in a League Cup fixture on Sunday at 16:00 BST.
Penrice said the move felt somewhat unreal and expressed his happiness at completing the agreement.
He acknowledged the expectations attached to representing Rangers, stressing that winning trophies is the sole aim and that failing to do so inevitably brings pressure.
Manager Derek McInnes believes Penrice will strengthen the team’s choices on the left side and increase competition for places.
McInnes also highlighted the player’s Scottish Premiership experience and familiarity with the club’s demands, adding that Penrice is eager to work diligently and advance his career.
