Real Madrid have renewed their call for the La Liga president to resign after he likened the club’s attempts to undermine referees to propaganda methods employed in Nazi Germany.
Javier Tebas criticised Madrid in an extensive social media post on Friday, focusing on claims made by the club’s television channel that refereeing decisions damage the team’s prospects of success. The channel frequently publishes compilations highlighting what it regards as serious mistakes by officials appointed to oversee forthcoming matches involving the 15-time European champions.
Tebas said the strategy resembled methods associated with Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Germany’s propaganda minister during the second world war.
Tebas claimed that Real Madrid’s leadership relies on a coordinated group of supportive voices, with the club directing the message. According to him, the approach repeatedly involves choosing favourable incidents, presenting them as injustices, creating suspicion and identifying supposed opponents. He said this pattern recalled propaganda techniques used by Goebbels.
He clarified that the comparison referred only to the methods being used, not to any ideology or to Real Madrid’s supporters.
Madrid issued a statement in response, arguing that Tebas was no longer suitable to represent Spain’s leading clubs. Tebas has repeatedly clashed with the club’s president, Florentino Pérez, and Madrid once again called for his immediate departure.
The club said Tebas’s recurring behaviour showed an absence of neutrality, respect and fairness that was incompatible with his official duties. It added that his continued criticism of Madrid and of those seeking greater transparency and reform had become seriously damaging to Spanish football.
Head coach José Mourinho has also complained that refereeing decisions regularly go against Madrid, the record 36-time champions of Spain.
Madrid previously demanded Tebas’s resignation in September after he condemned the club’s criticism of the officials involved in its 2-1 defeat by Atlético Madrid.
In its latest statement, Madrid also repeated its accusation that Tebas had failed to respond adequately to the continuing judicial investigation into alleged payments by Barcelona to a former official connected to the Spanish football federation’s refereeing committee.
